In one of his last campaign speeches, Donald Trump promised that if he were reelected, he would cooperate with Democratic governors and mayors. However, some blue-state leaders were actively plotting against the former president just hours after it was predicted that he would regain the White House. One of Trump’s harshest opponents, California Governor Gavin Newsom, called a special legislative session Thursday to increase funding for the state’s legal defenses against Republican policies pertaining to immigration, the environment, LGBTQ+ rights, and reproductive care. Attorney General Letitia James, one of Trump’s most combative first-term opponents, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul promised to strengthen coordination between their offices in order to “protect New Yorkers’ fundamental freedoms from any potential threats.” Additionally, just as their predecessors did hundreds of times during Trump’s first administration, attorneys general in blue states are ready to take him to court.
