Abbott’s Deal: Troops to Enforce Immigration

Under an agreement between the state and the Trump administration, Texas National Guard soldiers now have the power to make immigration arrests and assist in detaining and deporting undocumented individuals, provided that they are supervised and guided by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official. According to a copy of the agreement made public by Governor Greg Abbott’s office, guard members who are exercising their authority must always be in communication with a CBP official, but they can do so via radio, cellphone, or other technology. The collaboration is the most recent action taken by Texas to assist President Donald Trump in fulfilling his pledge to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and carry out mass deportations.
