Supreme Court Blocks New Deportations
The deportations of any Venezuelans detained in northern Texas under a wartime legislation from the 18th century were temporarily halted by the U.S. Supreme Court on Saturday. The Trump administration was instructed by the court in a short ruling to refrain from releasing Venezuelans detained at the Bluebonnet Detention Center “until further order from this court.” The American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency petition with the high court overnight, arguing that immigration officials seemed to be resuming removals under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act (AEA). Earlier in April, the Supreme Court ruled that deportations could only take place if the people who were about to be deported were given “a reasonable time” to challenge their impending removals and an opportunity to present their case in court.
