Florida Passes Immigration Bill – DeSantis Calls It Weak
Even though Florida legislature passed a restrictive immigration bill, Governor DeSantis believes it is weak and threatened to veto it. The final version of the bill includes a provision that makes the death penalty mandatory for immigrants who entered the country illegally and are convicted of a capital offense. It also creates financial penalties for government officials who do not comply with federal immigration law, a $5,000 fine. It includes requiring a maximum sentence for any immigrant who entered the country illegally and is a member of a gang and convicted of a crime. It requires their chief immigration officer to approve and enforce agreements between local law enforcement requiring they aid federal immigration officials. It also provides a $1,000 bonus for law enforcement officers who participate in U.S. Department of Homeland Security large task force operations. It would repeal in-state tuition for higher education students known as Dreamers.
