White House Announcement: Changes for Work Permit 765
On September 20, 2023, the Biden Administration announced that beginning October 1, 2023, USCIS has 3 initiatives about work permits. First, increase the maximum validity period of initial and renewal EADs to five years for certain noncitizens, including those admitted as refugees or granted asylum, recipients of withholding of removal, and applicants for asylum, adjustment of status, or cancellation of removal. The longer validity dates will apply to initial or renewal EADs issued after the announcement. Second, speed up processing for Employment Authorization Documents EADs filed by parolees who scheduled an appointment through CBP One. Third, decrease the median processing time for EADs from 90 days to 30 days for EADs based on CBP One parole, as well as for EADs based on Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan parole.
Due to President Trump’s Last In First out policy, the backlog of applicants is over 667,000, asylum seekers have waited many years for their interviews.
