The Biden administration strengthens strict asylum restrictions at the border

On Monday, the Biden administration announced that it is further tightening asylum restrictions at the southern border to demonstrate to concerned voters its firm stance on border security amid growing immigration issues. The stricter regulations, which strengthen those announced in June, prevent migrants from receiving asylum if officials believe the southern border is overcrowded. In accordance with the prior regulations, the United States had the authority to limit asylum availability if the volume of migrants attempting to cross the official borders reached 2,500 per day. In order for the restrictions to be lifted, the daily average numbers had to remain below 1,500 per day for a week. The latest update released on Monday indicates that the daily numbers must remain below 1,500 for almost a month in order for the restrictions to be lifted. Now, all children are being included in the count by the administration, whereas before, only children from Mexico were counted. These adjustments, set to take place on Tuesday, will significantly complicate the process of lifting the limitations and enable individuals who cross the border unofficially to eventually seek asylum in the United States.
