Judge Blocks Trump on Migrant Legal Status

A federal judge decided Monday that the Trump administration cannot immediately rescind the work permits and deportation protections of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who lawfully entered the US through a Biden-era program.  Judge Indira Talwani of the U.S. District Court stopped the Trump administration from implementing its April 24 plan to revoke those individuals’ legal status.  Those impacted by the announcement were forewarned by the administration that they would have to self-deport by that date or risk being arrested and deported by federal immigration officials. However, Talwani barred officials from rescinding the legal protection, known as immigration parole, that the Biden administration provided to nearly half a million Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, and suspended the government’s deportation threats.  According to Talwani, the mass parole terminations were not possible without an examination of each individual case.
