Trump Fast-Tracks Asylum Without Hearings

In an effort to expedite immigration court proceedings, the Trump administration has permitted judges to dismiss “legally deficient asylum cases without a hearing.”  An April 11 memo outlining the policy change was distributed to employees of the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review, which makes decisions about who can be deported from the United States. According to the instruction, immigration judges may decide someone is not eligible for asylum without holding a hearing based only on the information provided on a drawn-out and intricate asylum request form. The Trump administration is attempting to arrest and deport more individuals who do not have permanent legal status in the United States, according to the document.  However, the backlog of cases in the immigration court system has been increasing.
