DHS Ends Protection Over Afghan Travel
On May 13, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security formally announced the termination of Afghanistan’s Temporary Protected Status. Nearly two months prior, on March 21, 2025, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made the decision to terminate TPS for Afghans, according to DHS. Trump officials have pointed to a rise in travel to the war-torn and destitute nation as justification for lifting immigration protections for Afghans. According to the explanation, the Trump administration had already made the decision to revoke Afghanistan’s Temporary Protected Status and had frantically looked for evidence to back up the decision.
