Court Stops IRS Data Transfer
A federal judge on Friday prevented the Internal Revenue Service from providing information to immigration enforcement agencies, determining that the tax agency breached federal law and the rights of tens of thousands of people in its effort to join President Donald Trump’s mass deportation initiative.
In April, the Treasury and Homeland Security departments formally agreed to exchange private information about taxpayers who the Trump administration believed to be in the country illegally.Under the terms of the pact, signed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem, immigration officers would furnish the IRS with names, residences and other identifying information for individuals they intended to detain and deport.
To verify the people’s identity and location, the IRS would cross-reference those details with private databases.
