Court Weighs Haitian TPS Status

This might be the final court challenge to the Trump administration’s attempt to rescind protections for 350,000 Haitians who fled their unstable country before Temporary Protected Status for Haitians expires early next month.

Attorneys contesting the decision to terminate T.P.S. for Haitians contend that the decision was motivated more by politics and racial animosity than by a necessary evaluation of safety conditions in Haiti, where gangs have taken over a large portion of the capital since the last elected president was assassinated in 2021.

The attorneys have requested that the Federal District Court judge, Ana C. Reyes, postpone the revocation of T.P.S. for Haitians while the litigation is pending. Judge Reyes stated on Tuesday that she anticipates making a decision on the motion by February 2, the day before Haitians’ status is set to expire.
