U.S. Labor Secretary advocates for safeguards for unauthorized immigrant workers while in Green Bay

Labor organizations and supporters claim that although Wisconsin industries like dairy and manufacturing significantly depend on illegal immigrant labor, workers’ rights and safety are frequently neglected.  Workers from Voces de la Frontera discussed mistreatment they had experienced and the immigration relief program that provided some of them the confidence to come out with Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su and representatives from other labor groups on Monday afternoon in their Green Bay office. People at the gathering informed Su that, despite being the backbone of many sectors, illegal immigrant workers frequently have their salaries withheld or face hazardous working conditions. Their grievances are then often utilized against them, they claimed. Undocumented immigrant workers can receive temporary protection from deportation under the immigration relief program known as Deferred Action for Labor Enforcement, or DALE, provided they help labor authorities look into labor violations committed by their employers.  Undocumented immigrant workers are eligible for deferred action status for a maximum of four years. If the labor authorities conducting the inquiry feel that the workers’ ongoing involvement would further the probe, it may also be extended by two-year increments. For the duration that their deferred action status is in effect, workers are permitted to seek for work permits and engage in lawful employment.Undocumented immigrant workers are eligible for deferred action status for a maximum of four years.
