Judge Halts Child Deportations

A federal court in Arizona ruled Thursday that the Trump administration could not immediately remove dozens of Guatemalan and Honduran youngsters who had entered the country alone and were in foster care or shelters. A temporary restraining order imposed over the Labor Day weekend was extended by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Márquez in Tucson until at least September 26.

 

Márquez questioned if the administration had made arrangements for any Guatemalan parent or guardian to assume custody of the youngsters. The children’s attorneys said that the government is not abiding by regulations intended to safeguard migrant children and that their clients are afraid to return home. The Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project sued in Arizona on behalf of 12 Honduran children, ages 3 to 17, and 57 Guatemalan children.
