Senate Advances Laken Riley Bill
On Monday, the Laken Riley Act passed a second procedural obstacle in the Senate as discussions shift to a Democratic amendment effort that could modify the bill. Senators cast their votes at 82-10 in favor of the motion to move forward with the legislation, enabling the chamber to start discussions. This legislation would require federal detention of immigrants lacking legal status who are accused of theft, burglary, and other similar offenses. On Thursday, it overcame an initial obstacle with a decisive 84-9 vote.
