ICE Officer Kills Suspect Near Chicago
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot a suspect Friday in Franklin Park, a suburb west of Chicago, after the man allegedly drove his car at officers and dragged one of them, according to federal officials.
The suspect, identified as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Both he and the officer who was struck were transported for treatment following the incident.
ICE said Villegas-Gonzalez had a history of reckless driving and was in the U.S. illegally. When officers attempted to arrest him, he refused commands and accelerated toward them, prompting the officer to open fire.
The shooting comes amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, including “Operation Midway Blitz,”targeting Chicago’s sanctuary city policies. Advocates, however, argue the incident highlights the dangers of militarized immigration enforcement and called for accountability.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker demanded transparency, while local leaders and immigrant rights groups described the shooting as a tragedy. Community members gathered to protest the incident, saying enforcement efforts create fear and harm within immigrant neighborhoods.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
