Illinois Governor Restricts ICE Role
In an effort to counter an aggressive federal campaign of mass deportations, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) signed a number of measures into law on Tuesday that aim to restrict immigration enforcement in the state. Signed in Chicago’s mostly Latino Little Village neighborhood, the law expands safeguards for immigrant families and other individuals affected by federal immigration enforcement.
It limits the information that Illinois hospitals, childcare institutions, and colleges can provide to immigration officials and prohibits civil immigration arrests within state courthouses or within 1,000 feet of those locations. Additionally, the bill makes it simpler for anyone to file a lawsuit against immigration officials if they feel their rights were infringed.
