Immigration Crackdown: Fake Agents Busted
At a time when actual Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have increased their immigration enforcement efforts under the Trump administration, authorities in at least three states have arrested people who are allegedly impersonating ICE officers. This has increased migrant communities’ already-existing fears of law enforcement. After allegedly holding a group of Latino men on a Charleston County road, Sean-Michael Johnson, 33, was charged with kidnapping and posing as a police officer in South Carolina. According to court documents, Johnson is charged with “willfully and unlawfully presenting himself as an ICE Agent and detaining a vehicle of individuals from moving.” In a statement released on Wednesday, an ICE spokesperson pointed out that “imposters” who engage in such “dangerous” behavior may be charged with crimes at the federal, state, and local levels.
