SCOTUS Clears Way for Third-Country Deportations
On June 23, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration could deport undocumented immigrants to countries other than their own. The unsigned order overturns a lower court decision that allowed unauthorized noncitizens to prove the danger of persecution, torture, or even death if the U.S. carries out “third country removal.” Although the Supreme Court’s ruling was released without reasoning, Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor presented a harsh dissent.
