When you were adopted, your birth parents probably agreed to terminate their parental rights. This is an important decision and, under the law, you cannot “double-dip” in terms of sponsorship. Congress has already thought about this and stated that, once you obtain your status through adoption or a special immigrant juvenile visa, you cannot apply for residency for your birth parents. Technically, that legal relationship no longer exists.
