"Swamp Sweep" is launched by the Border Patrol in New Orleans

According to rumors, Border Patrol officers are scheduled to begin immigration enforcement operations in New Orleans on Monday with the intention of making 5,000 arrests in Mississippi and south Louisiana. After completing enforcement in Charlotte and Chicago, the effort is apparently being led by Customs and Border Protection Commander Greg Bovino. Where they will concentrate is unknown. Protests started over the weekend, and social media reports indicated that arrests had already taken place in Algiers and Metairie. A new online resource has been released by the Louisiana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to assist small company owners and staff in getting ready. Last month, NOPD Chief Anne Kirkpatrick told WBOK that although the police department will collaborate with federal authorities, it will not initiate immigration arrests or inquire about immigration status during regular encounters. According to reports, the Border Patrol will stay in the area for two months.
