Trump Stops Green Card Lottery
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that President Donald Trump directed her to suspend the diversity visa (DV1) program at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a national of Portugal, is believed to be the gunman responsible for the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others at Brown University on Saturday.
According to Noem, Valente came to the U.S. via the DV1 program in 2017 and received a green card. Noem shared on X Thursday night that she had directed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to suspend the (DV1) program “to prevent further harm to Americans from this disastrous program.” The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV Program) provides as many as 50,000 immigrant visas annually, based on information from the USCIS website.
The program functions as a lottery. Visas are distributed randomly to people from nations that have low immigration rates to the U.S.
