Judge Blocks Florida Immigration Law, Citing Federal Authority

Citing the federal government’s authority over immigration, a U.S. district judge on Friday issued a temporary halt to a new Florida law designed to target undocumented immigrants. Judge Kathleen Williams from Miami released a 14-page ruling that approved a petition for a temporary restraining order against the legislation, which was endorsed by the Republican-led Legislature and Governor Ron DeSantis in February. The legislation established state offenses for unauthorized immigrants who enter or re-enter Florida. Two days after the Florida Immigrant Coalition, the Farmworker Association of Florida, and two individual plaintiffs filed a lawsuit claiming that the law breaches the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution due to federal responsibility for immigration enforcement, Williams issued the temporary restraining order.
