Court Allows Trump to Keep Troops in LA

A U.S. appeals court temporarily halted a lower court decision that had prevented President Donald Trump from deploying National Guard troops in Los Angeles amid protests over increased immigration enforcement on Thursday. The ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals does not necessarily indicate that the court will support Trump in the end, but it does give the president temporary leadership of the Guard. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer of San Francisco ruled earlier Thursday that Trump’s use of the Guard was illegal. Breyer’s 36-page decision had mandated that California Governor Gavin Newsom, who had initiated the case, regain command of the National Guard. Newsom’s victory was short-lived, as around two and a half hours later, Breyer’s ruling was paused. The appeals courts will have more time to evaluate the Trump administration’s request to halt Breyer’s order while the case is still pending thanks to the court’s action, known as an administrative stay. In order to examine the merits of Breyer’s decision, the panel said that it would hold a hearing on Tuesday.
