Court Backs Trump’s Guard Order
The White House’s attempt to federalize National Guard troops for use in Chicago was temporarily overturned by a federal appeals court on Saturday, but the judge’s order preventing their deployment in the city was still in place.
The U.S. Army Reserve Center in Elwood, Illinois, which is approximately an hour outside of Chicago, is now the facility where the troops may stay. U.S. District Judge April Perry’s decision, which on Thursday prohibited the White House from federalizing and deploying National Guard troops from Illinois and Texas in the city, was partially overturned by the appeals court.
Perry rejected the administration’s claim that the troops were required to put an end to protests and unrest that President Donald Trump has claimed are interfering with federal immigration enforcement.
