Immigrant Father Released from Jail
According to his family, a dad whose 16-year-old daughter is fighting stage 4 cancer was freed from immigration custody on Thursday. Ruben Torres-Maldonado’s family representative informed ABC News that the illegal father was freed from Brazil, Indiana’s Clay County Jail on Thursday night and was traveling to Chicago to see his daughter, Ofelia Torres. Torres-Maldonado was previously given a $2,000 bail by Chicago immigration judge Eva Saltzman.
In addition to ruling in favor of his release during the hearing, the court stated that he is now qualified to request a cancellation of removal due to the difficulties his family would face if he were compelled to leave the nation. Saltzman stated she had no reason to think Torres-Maldonado constituted a risk to the public, despite the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) earlier assertion that he was a “criminal illegal alien” with a history of driving violations. Last December, Ofelia received a diagnosis of metastatic aviolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive type of cancer.
