Trump Pushes California to End Spanish-Based Immigration
The Trump administration has petitioned the Supreme Court to permit immigration enforcement officers in Southern California to keep holding people in detention partly because they speak Spanish, have certain employment, or are in particular places. The motion comes after decisions from lower courts that said the practice probably violates the Fourth Amendment’s prohibitions on unjustified searches and seizures. Last month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were prohibited from stopping people based on their race, ethnicity, language, occupation, or presence in specific areas by U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong. In the upcoming weeks, the Supreme Court is anticipated to review the administration’s emergency plea.
