Trump Pressures Red States on Maps

Trump Pressures Red States on Maps

Former President Donald Trump and his allies are pressuring Republican-led states to redraw congressional maps before the 2026 elections, breaking from the traditional census cycle. After Republicans in Texas approved a mid-decade redraw that added five GOP-leaning seats, Democrats in California responded with a plan to add five Democratic seats of their own. Now, the focus is shifting to Missouri, Indiana, Florida, and Ohio, where Trump and his team are urging state lawmakers to follow Texas’s lead. Some Republicans are hesitant, worried about political risks, but Trump’s direct involvement has made it harder for them to resist.

The push is all about control of the U.S. House. With Republicans holding only a narrow majority, even a few new districts could help secure their advantage heading into 2026 and protect Trump’s agenda if he returns to the White House. Democrats say they’ll “fight fire with fire,” but their options are limited because many blue states already lean heavily Democratic or use independent redistricting commissions. As the battle spreads to more states, one thing is clear: redistricting has become one of the biggest political weapons in the fight for power.
