Appeals Court Deals Blow to Trump Tariffs
A recent federal appeals court ruling has dealt a significant blow to former President Donald Trump’s trade agenda, blocking his broad use of tariffs under emergency economic powers. The court found that only Congress has the authority to impose new import taxes, undermining o1ne of Trump’s key tools for raising revenue and negotiating with foreign leaders.
Trump has long described tariffs as central to his strategy, calling them a way to “Make America Rich, Strong, and Powerful Again.” His administration projected that the tariffs could offset costs from his sweeping tax and immigration package. However, the court’s decision challenges his ability to leverage tariffs as a political and economic weapon.
While industry-specific tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos remain in place under separate laws, the broader country-by-country duties Trump imposed are now in jeopardy. The Justice Department plans to appeal to the Supreme Court, but experts say success is uncertain.
For now, the ruling threatens to stall much of Trump’s second-term agenda, with potential consequences for trade policy, consumer prices, and U.S. economic strategy.
