As the Justice Department released new guidelines on which white-collar investigations will be prioritized, the FBI ordered agents on Monday to focus more on immigration enforcement and reduce their investigation of white-collar crime, four people familiar with the situation told Reuters. During a series of briefings, field offices informed FBI agents that they would have to begin spending roughly one-third of their time assisting the Trump administration in its efforts to combat illegal immigration. The people, who asked to remain anonymous in order to share private conversations, claimed that they were informed that pursuing white-collar cases will be deprioritized for at least the rest of 2025. It was not immediately clear to Reuters how many field offices were notified of the move or whether it will affect agents nationwide. The directives were issued on the same day that Matthew Galeotti, the head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, gave prosecutors new guidelines that limit the department’s traditional pursuit of white-collar cases and direct them to “minimize the length and collateral impact” of such investigations.
